William R. studied law at the Middle Temple,London, and was admitted to the bar in Phila. in 1808. He was a Colonel of the 42nd Pa. Reserves in the war of 1812 and commanded this regiment in the movement on Canada. He was in the battle of Lundy´s Lane.He removed to Huntingdon Co. in 1809, served many terms in the legislature. Afterwards settled in Mineral Point, where he passed the remainder of his life. Here he was Adjutant General of Wisconsin in1839-52 and District Attorney of Luna County for many years; member of the Constitutional Convention; Chief Clerk of the State Senate 1849-50 and Attorney General 1856-58; President of Wisconsin Historical Society.He was a bright and active Freemason; Past Master of the Mineral Point Lodge of Wisconsin. He was a voluminous writer and many of his works have been published. He had a cultivated poetical taste and much of his writing in verse is preserved and prized by his descendants.He was an attorney-at-law and private secretary to his father at the time he was commissioner under the Jay Treaty between the United States and Great Britain.Source: Email from Richard Reinhold (RSR), 3/21/04.
