Birth: 1829 Washington District of Columbia District Of Columbia, USA Death: Jul. 28, 1871 Prince George's County Maryland, USA "At Woodside, Prince George's county, Md., on the 28th of July, after a brief illness, Doctor MONTGOMERY JOHNS, eldest son of the late Rev. Henry V. D. Johns. Dr. Johns, educated at Princeton, had filled many important positions in our literary and medical schools, and was well known in this State for his scientific attainments and for his successful labors as an educator. For the last two years he had seriously contemplated devoting himself to the ministry, and was admitted as candidate for orders by the Bishop of the Diocese over a year ago. During that time he suffered very much from disease, but notwithstanding he was industriously pursuing his theological studies to an extent and variety which none can equal, unless gifted with like extraordinary powers of acquisition . Though carrying on his farm, school and part of the time lecturing in Washington, his acquirements in theology proper and theological literature and Hebrew, would have done credit to many of our oldest divines. He had also, at the time of his death, a Hebrew grammar for students in preparation that would have gone to press at no distant day. It was this vast amount of work that overtasked his constitution, and led to an early death. He had forced the work of sixty years into forty." The Alexandria (Va.)
