Born at Clarkston, Monroe Co NY Jan. 9, 1830. Parents were David and Ellen (Sutphen) Schanck, formerly of New Jersey. He came with parents 1834 to Washtenaw Co. In 1842 came to Bruce Twp, Macomb Co. In 1856 he and bro Henry bought farm in Dryden Twp. John was 1 of family of 10, all survive. Youngest, now 54, named Henry Schanck; others Mrs. Allen Hosner, Mrs. Richard Smith of Dryden; Geo. S. of Hadley; Charles of Bruce Twp; Mrs. Walter Barrows and Mrs. Archibald Groves of Davison; Mrs. John Castle and Mrs. Daniel Curtis of Linden. John married Jan 24, 1877 Alydia E. Wilbur.of Dryden who had 4 sons and 1 dau who became his step-children. They are J.U. and Ira E. Wilbur, Mrs. Eugene Haines of Dryden; Hiatt of Columbia S.D.; and A.O. of Metamora.
