  In 1850 he is living a few farms away from William Barkalow, age 33; James Barkalow Schenck was born in 1857 in Indiana but seen in 1860 in Miamisburg, Montgomery, OH with his parents Aaron D. Schenck and Rebecca Barkalow. In 1850 & 60 & 70 & 1900 & 10 he says he was born in Ohio. In 1900 he says his father was born in Holland, mother born unknown. The correct spelling of the last name is Schenck, though some branches of the family changed the spelling over the years. From what I've found in my research, both the Schencks and the Elys have been in this country for a long time. My Schencks originally went to New Jersey after coming from the Netherlands, and quite a few of the Schencks (and some of the Elys) moved to Ohio at some point. Hannah and Daniel then migrated to Indiana, Missouri & died in Kansas. We also have a connection through Rebecca Ely marrying Koertenious Schenck (Schanck.) They were of Freehold, NJ. I have some old letters and news clippings on this branch of the family too. The oldest letter is dated 4/3/1892 and I had to outbid the New Jersey Historical Society to get all that stuff. Daniel C. Schenck was born 3/13/1824 in New Jersey (still haven't found the city) and died 6/19/1911 in Burlingame or Carbondale, Osage County, Kansas where he is buried in the Burlingame Cem. Hannah died 2/19/1910 and is also buried in the Burlingame Cemetery. I bought some "Schenck for Congress" cork coasters on Ebay, so I suppose they were for Paul Schenck, who is another distant cousin.
