Birth: May 15, 1812 Death: Aug. 17, 1879 Mr. Garrett H. VanMater died at his residence at Chapel Hill on Sunday morning at 10 o'clock after an illness of eighteen months. Mr. VanMater was born on the 15th of May, 1812, near Arrowsmith's mIlls, in old Middletown, and worked at the farming business with his father until he was nineteen years of age when he went to New York and learned the carpenter trade. He was moderately successful and invested his earnings in Hoboken lands. Soon after, he removed to Hoboken an set up in business as a contractor and builder. during his residence there he was twice elected a member of the Hoboken Common council. In 1862 he retired from business and removed to Chapel Hill, where he lived until his death. His only public appearance in Monmouth county was as a member of the Grand Jury. He was much respected for his sterling honesty and honorable dealings. He took great interest in debating societies and attended all that were held within a radius of five miles. His funeral was held at the house on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and was largely attended by his friends and neighbors. The services were conducted by the Revs. E. J. Foote, of Middletown, and Wm. Wilson, of Port Monmouth. His remains were interred in Fairview Cemetery.Red Bank Register, Thurs., Aug. 21, 1879
