Death: Sep. 18, 1845 Eaton (Preble County) Preble County Ohio, USA
THE REGISTER HERALD (Sesquicentennial Edition) dated Wednesday, June 13, 1956. CAPTAIN DAVID E. HENDRICKS was born at Middletown Point, Monmouth County, New Jersey, June 15, 1765. His grandfather, father and family came from Holland to America in the early seventeen hundreds. At the time of the Revolution his father was extensively engaged in mercantile pursuits and became quite wealthy. To save his property he supported the British but David and his brothers were loyal to the colonies serving in the army. After the war in 1789 David came to the new settlement at Marietta, Ohio. He gave valuable service as a spy with General Harmer and General St. Clair in the campaign against the Indians and later was with General Anthony Wayne in western Ohio. After the treaty of peace at Fort Greenville in 1795 he returned to Fort Hamilton with the intention of making his home there. On September 10, 1796 he married Rosanna Stockhouse by whom he had a large family of children. Later with his family he came to Preble County in 1803 and located on the present site of Camden. When Eaton was laid out, his was the first family to take residence arriving April 2, 1806. He built a temporary shelter and returned to Camden for his family. Later he erected a two story log house and in it kept the first tavern in Eaton. In the War of 1812 he raised a company of skilled frontiers-men of which he was appointed captain to protect the new settlements from the Indian attacks. He died at the home of his son George on September 18, 1845 and was buried in Mound Hill Cemetery. - [S103] Nelson, William., Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey.
