On January 1, 1782, at the age of sixteen, William M. Hendricks enlisted for one year in Captain John Walton's state cavalry troop under Colonel Asher Holmes. According to his pension claim S. 2303 which was applied for on February 1, 1836 and granted on May 24, 1836 under the American Revolution Claim Act of 1832. William M. Hendricks was stationed at Monmouth County Court House during 1782. He was employed in "protecting the frontiers and the inhabitants of the county of Monmouth". He was discharged after nine months at the request of his parents "who were then aged, lonely, and in unprotected circumstances". William stated that he had not applied for a pension earlier because of failing health and difficulty witnesses to his service. Furthermore "he would rather remain unpensioned than by a fruitless effort [to get a pension] jeopardize that reputation for fidelity to his country, which is now no small satifaction and solace."

William Hendricks married Charity Robinson on December 21, 1756 at Tennent Church in Tennent, NJ. She was the daughter of James Robinson and Charity Van Dyke. James Robinson was a prominent merchant and had emigrated to Freehold in 1727 from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Their daughter, Charity Robinson, was baptized at White Hill (later Tenneant Church) on Monday night, February 5, 1738/39 according to her mother's New Testament Bible (text in Dutch, published in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1719; property of Tennent Church). William Hendricks died on November 19, 1760 according to the Dutch Bible. His grave site is unknown. His wife, Charity Robinson, susequently married Abraham Jones on August 22, 1771 and later Richard an ter. She was buried at the Old Baptist Church graveyard in Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ although her grave can not be presently located.
