Hendrickson, Okey, a descendant of a Dutch-Swede family, emigrated from New York to Lancaster Co. abt. the year 1815. He was a man of unusual enterprise and public spirit for his time. He was instrumental in the establishment of a post-office in Mt. Joy, and was appointed the first postmaster, which position he held for many years under different administrations, until 1837, when on account of the active support he gave the Anti-Masonic party, he was succeeded by a Democrat. He was re-appointed to the same position in1841, under President Harrison, with whom he enjoyed a personal acquaintance. and whom he had entertained in his house, but died before entering on the duties of the office. Out of respect for his memory, the appointment was promptly conferred upon James, his oldest son. The project of a railroad, connecting Lancaster with the State Capital, originated in the town of Mount Joy; and Okey Hendrickson, who was one of the incorporators, was influential, in concert with Jacob Rohrer, esq., Dr. Simon Meredith, Abraham Harnley, Henry Musselman, and Samuel Smith Patterson, in procuring a charter for the road, and the capital for its construction.

About 1818 he[Cornelius] sold or transferred his claim to Ebenezer Byers and George McDowell, who afterwards obtained the patent. It is quite probable that Oakey [or Okey] Hendrickson, a son of the doctor, also had an interest in the property. George McDowell, is said to have been his son-in-law. it is quite probable that Daniel Hendrickson had no interest, but was merely a squatter on his father's land for a short time. [ skip] The old doctor and his son, Cornelius, Jr., after a few years, emigrated to Ohio, probably about 1818 or 1820.
