John D. Barkalow was also called "Preacher Barkalow". He was Overseer of the Poor for Freehold Township from 1830-1842, elected Justice of the Peace for the township October 30, 1843, Elder of Independent Methodist church.
His church records (1812-1873) were published in George C. Beekman's Early Dutch Settlers of Monmouth County New Jersey. Preacher Barkalow preach(ed) and married without salary. He was known for his "wood meetings" where he would preach 6-10 miles out in the pines.
