  • Notes
    • "I find Daniel Hendrickson running a girst mill on the Millstone river, in Somerset county. N. J., in the year 1741. This may be the same person. His grandfather (uncle), Hendricks Hendrickson, with Peter Cortelyou, Stoffel Probasco, Thepdon Polhemus, Hendrick Lott, Jacques Cortelyou, Dionje Denyse, and Cornelius Wyckoff, purchased in 1701, of John Harrison ten thousand acres of land in Franklin township, Somerset county, N. J. This land extended from Millstone river over to the old Indian path which ran from the tails of the Delaware River across New Jersey to a point about three miles from the mouth of the Raritan river. Here the river was crossed and the path ran over to Mount Pleasant and from there to Crawford's Corner, and from there over the hills by the residence of Daniel Hendricks, the pioneer settler to Ruckman's Hills at Middletown village, and here intersected the old Indian path from Freehold to the bay shore and to Sandy Hook. The eight purchasers divided this trac into eight parts. Now Daniel Hendrickson, the youngest son of William, had an opportunity to learn the miller's business in his father's mill on Mahoras brook, heretofore mentioned. His uncle Daniel, left him by will a small lot of land at Perth Amboy. This would indicate that Daniel had removed to this town or vicinity at the mouth of the Raritan river. His grandfather (uncle), Hendrick, owned lands on the Millstone River which afforded a good site for grist mills, a business which he understood. Neither is Daniel Hendricks, the youngrest son of William, named in any of our county records after the probate of his uncle Daniel's will. There is a probability from these considerations that the miller of this name on the Millstone river in 1741 may have been this man." Daniel Hendrickson, youngest child of William & Willemptje Hendrickson, was born about 1709/10 in Monmouth County, NJ. Left without either parent by the ageof 2, we do not know anything of Daniel's early life.

Daniel's name is on a list of heads of families in the congregation of the New Brunswick Dutch Church, 1732-35, and on a tax list of Franklin Twp., Somerset County for 1735. For about the next thirty some odd years we run across Daniel's name in connection with his mill, various deeds, witnessing wills., ect.,

Daniel, like his father, was a miller , and by 1741 he had a grist mill in Somerset County, New Jersey. In 1747 Daniel Hendrickson was a Comissioner of HIghways.

The last date we have for our Daniel is 1776 when he owned a house in Somerset County. Daniel's property was in both present day Somerset and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey. It is probable that Daniel is the "Dr. Hendrickson" listed in Franklin wp., in 1776; this might explain why his son Okey performed services of a doctor among wounded soldiers in his vicinity during the Revolutionary War; and later on his son Cornelius also became a "physician' in western Pennsylvania.

Daniel Hendrickson would have been about 67 years of age in 1776 -- we do not know when he died. There seems to be no will nor administration proceedings for him on record.

Daniel was married twice. His first wife , and ancestress of the compiler of these notes, was Magdalena, to whom he was married about 1730/31. Much controversy surrounds the identity of this Magdalena. Donald Sinclair, Curator of Special Collections at the Library of Rutgers University in New Brunswick was convinced that Magdalena was a VanNuys, or a VanNuys descendant (because of the names "Okey" and "Magdalena" given to her descendants.) In most cases where the name "Okey," a version of "Aucke" the name of the original VanNuys immigrant, appears among other early Dutch families, they received it from the VanNuys amily. Aucke VanNuy's wife was Magdalene Pieterse, whom he married in Holland, and the name "Magdalena" did not appear in the Hendrickson Family until a son of Daniel & Magdalena named a daughter "Magdalena." Much pro and con has been argued over who this Magdelena was, and with this brief introduction of the problem, I will leave it for further genealogist to pursue.

Magdalena, Daniel's first wife, died in 1738. Daniels married second about 1739 to Ida Wyckoff (1710-1804) a widow, who was a great granddaughter of the immigrant Aucke Jansen VanNuys, and possibly a cousin to Daniel's first wife.
