Thomas Hamilton's son Jonathan lived in Caroline Township Tioga County, New York, and had a son Ira; they were farmers there, then the next generation, Frank, moved to Iowa in the 1870's, where he too was a farmer. The transfer deed made when he sold his part of land he inherited from his father, Thomas Hamilton, to one of his brothers (William). At this time Jonathan is living in Barton Township, Tioga, New York. The indenture was made January 14, 1830. In the booklet "Ye Descendants of One Thomas Hamilton" by Mary E. Hamilton, published December 1911 it says the following--"Jonathan, by trade a well digger at Hornellsville, and was killed by a well caving in. He was a great disputer, liked to argue." From: "Lucy B. Kempton" French, 1860, pg.626: "HORNELLSVILLE (named for Hon. Geo. Hornell, one of the early settlers) was formed from Canisteo, April 1, 1820. It lies near the center of the west border of the county of Steuben." The town of Caroline was formed from Spencer, Tioga County in 1811 and transferred to Tompkins County in 1822. At the time the war broke out all able-bodied men over 16 years of age were required to be members of their local militia and attend yearly general training where they lived. Each man who served had to pay for his own clothing and other needs. The original records of claims for reimbursement are housed at the Bureau of War Records, Division of Military and Naval Affairs, Public Security Building, Albany, N.Y. All of these men were residents of N.Y. State during their war service but may not have lived in Tioga County at the time of their service.
