In the spring of 1850 they left their home in Louisiana to go to California. After visiting with relatives in Kentucky they went to Council Bluffs, Iowa and joined a company of Mormons bound for Salt Lake City. Allen's brother, Josiah, was with the group . While traveling along the North Platte River in Nebraska, Elizabeth died of cholera 12 June 1850. When the company arrived at the head of the Sweet Water River in Wyoming, preumably near South Pass, Allen became ill. He got up in the night and according to one account mistakenly took the wrong medicine which caused his death on the 12 July 1850.
