In the spring of 1850, Allen and his family left their home at Red River,
Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, intending to go to California. After visiting
with relatives in Kentucky they went to Council Bluffs, Iowa and joined a
company of Mormons bound for Salt lake City. Allen's brother, Josiah, was with
the group. While traveling along the North Platte River in Nebraska, Elizabeth
died of cholera, 12 June 1850. When the company arrived at the head of the
Sweet Water River in Wyoming, presumably near South Pass, Allen became ill. He
got up in the night and according to one account, mistakenly took the wrong
medicine which caused his death on 12 July 1850. Josiah cared for the four
orphaned children until they reached Salt Lake City, where four of Allen's
sisters were living. Samuel, the baby, and Elizabeth, the oldest, were taken
by Neriah and Rebecca Lewis; William by Thomas Edwin and Tabitha Ricks; John,
three years of age, was given to Brother and Sister Rosell Hyde and two years
later to the Jonathan Holmes family, where he lived until grown. However, when
Josiah first arrived in the Salt Lake Valley with the four children, he took
them to his Aunt Drusilla and Uncle James Hendricks, where they lived for some
time.
