According to one branch of Edwards family descendants, West Edwards brought two of his young sons, Drew and Thomas F., from Edgecomb Co., NC to Sumner Co., TN to clear a section of land. He had obtained 640 acres on Drake Creek by grant. By fall they had cleared the land and built a house. West returned to North Carolina with the intention of moving the rest of the family to Tennessee in the spring. The two sons who stayed behind had become friends of the Hendricks, Hinton, and Dorris families who lived in the vicinity.

West Edwards died early in the year 1815 in North Carolina, and so did not return to Tennessee, nor did his wife and other children. However, Thomas Fitzhugh and Drew Edwards stayed in Tennessee and inherited the land they had cleared with their father. In 1817 Thomas married Charlotte Hendricks. This marriage lasted only ten years. Thomas was dead by 11 Nov 1827 as evidenced by a court record in which William Rider is listed as guardian to the heirs of Thomas Edwards, deceased. (Sumner Co., TN, Registrars Office, Inventories & Settlements, Book 2, 1826-1831, p. 169.)
Information regarding Thomsas's death is quoted from Paul T. Garrett below: Thomas Fitzhugh Edward was killed when a skid slipped and a log accidentally fell on him while raising a log house for his friends John and Polly (Margaret) Hinton. Someone yelled "everyone for himself" as the log fell. Thomas was buried in a family cemetery.

West Edwards was living in Greene Co., NC by 1800. Other databases list Thomas' birthplace as Edgecombe Co., NC and Southampton Co., VA where West's fater was apparntly still residing in 1798.

According to family tradition Thomas was killed while raising John and Polly Hinton' s log cabin. As far as I have been able to determine John lived in Sumner Co., TN on Drakes Creek as did Thomas F. Edwards. I am not sure which "Family Cemetery" Thomas was buried in but it appears that no marker exists for the burial.
