He was injured when a caboose ran over his foot, cutting part of it off, and this injury finally resulted in his being furloughed from the C & O railroad. He then became the assistant secretary for the railroad YMCA, a position he held for 26 years. Earlier in his life he was ordained a Methodist preacher.
