| 3106 | In 1850 he is living a few farms away from William Barkalow, age 33; James Barkalow Schenck was born in 1857 in Indiana but seen in 1860 in Miamisburg, Montgomery, OH with his parents Aaron D. Schenck and Rebecca Barkalow. In 1850 & 60 & 70 & 1900 & 10 he says he was born in Ohio. In 1900 he says his father was born in Holland, mother born unknown. The correct spelling of the last name is Schenck, though some branches of the family changed the spelling over the years. From what I've found in my research, both the Schencks and the Elys have been in this country for a long time. My Schencks originally went to New Jersey after coming from the Netherlands, and quite a few of the Schencks (and some of the Elys) moved to Ohio at some point. Hannah and Daniel then migrated to Indiana, Missouri & died in Kansas. We also have a connection through Rebecca Ely marrying Koertenious Schenck (Schanck.) They were of Freehold, NJ. I have some old letters and news clippings on this branch of the family too. The oldest letter is dated 4/3/1892 and I had to outbid the New Jersey Historical Society to get all that stuff. Daniel C. Schenck was born 3/13/1824 in New Jersey (still haven't found the city) and died 6/19/1911 in Burlingame or Carbondale, Osage County, Kansas where he is buried in the Burlingame Cem. Hannah died 2/19/1910 and is also buried in the Burlingame Cemetery. I bought some "Schenck for Congress" cork coasters on Ebay, so I suppose they were for Paul Schenck, who is another distant cousin. I have links on a family website to scans of all those old documents if you're interested. | SCHENCK, Daniel C. (I9144)

| 3120 | Johannes (John) Hendricks 1991: 3 1963: 3 In 1939 Katherine Frost (West) Cowherd, a 2nd great-grand-daughter of John and Mary (Perkins) Hendricks wrote: "John Hendricks was a soldier in the Revolution. He moved to Simpson County, Kentucky in 1802 from North Carolina." This report that he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War is undocumented. Her note is also the only source indicating that Mary Perkins was John's second wife. Katherine recorded this information after a talk with "Uncle Jimmin" (James Samuel Hendricks, D020810): "Great-great grandfather, John Hendricks came from North Carolina in 1802 to Kentucky, married a Miss Perkins, mother of John T. Hendricks, who is half-brother to William Hendricks, Des Moines, Iowa." A map of landholders in Rockingham County, NC shows John acquiring land in 1787, close to his father. This is verified by a deed dated 16 May 1787 from the State of North Carolina to John Hendrickson which includes 350 acres on Little Rock House Creek. The price was 50 shillings. John Hendrickson deeds this same land to Francis Wright on 23 July 1805 for $412.50. John's family appeared in the 1800 and 1810 censuses of Rockingham County, North Carolina, and in the 1820 census of Simpson County, Kentucky. It is unknown which of the children belong to which wife. It is known that William belongs to wife #1 and John Thompson belongs to wife #2 (Mary Perkins). The six older children have been assigned to the first wife and the last three to Mary. The first wife's death would have occurred sometime between about 1788 and 1793. There is also the possibility that some of the children are John's step-children if Mary Perkins was married previously. SOURCES: !CHRISTENING: Register of Freehold; Vol. 25; p. 88; This extraction of the Middletown Church records lists no date for Johannes' christening. However, it appears from other entries that several children may have been christened on the same day, but the date entered only on the first christening of the day. If accurate, Johannes was christened 9 Sep 1753. This has been interpreted differently by other researchers. !CENSUS: 1800 Rockingham Co., NC.; FHL 8,984 !CENSUS: 1810 Warren Co., KY.; FHL 24,915 !CENSUS: 1820 Simpson Co., KY; FHL 25,562, part 13 !MARRIAGE: Letter dated 2 Mar 1983 from Joy H. | 3123 | John HENDRICKS (HENDRIX) 1995: 19 1991: 34 1963: 20 By following the birth places of John's children it is evident they followed the family migration pattern from Sumner County, Tennessee/Simpson County, Kentucky to Jackson County, Missouri. Family tradition has it that John became disillusioned with Missouri and moved his family to Sherman, Grayson County, Texas shortly after his 15th child, Levi, was born in 1845. This is verified by the 1850 Sherman census. In about 1830 when the family migrated to Missouri, John began spelling his surname "HENDRIX" and continued using that spelling throughout his life. All but one of his sons and their descendants perpetuated this spelling. Both John and his wife Ruth are buried in the Hendrix family cemetery four miles NE of Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. !DEATH: Two death dates are given, 11 Jan 1892 and 5 Jan 1892. The following was published in the Franklin, Simpson County, Kentucky newspaper: UNCLE JOHN HENDRICKS Sketch of an aged Texan closely related to the Late John T. Hendricks of this county. He formerly lived here. The following sketch was clipped from a Texas Paper. The subject of it was formerly a citizen of this county and had many relatives of the name living in Simpson who will be interested in reading the brief, but somewhat remarkable sketch of him below: Dennison, Texas Jan. 5th -- In yesterdays correspondence from Sherman to the News, mention is made of the death of "Uncle" John Hendricks. Inasmuch as there is a good deal of Texas and Grayson County history connected with the life of Mr. Hendricks, the correspondant called on one fo the great-grandchildren of the old Gentleman and secured the following particulars with reference to his early life and his life in Texas: At the time of his death John Hendricks lacked only 27 days of being 94 years of age. He was the oldest son of Grayson Co., and a pioneer of 1845. His father Albert Hendricks (Uncle Obbie) served four years under Washington in the Revolutionary War and at the end of his service removed from New Jersey, his native State, to Rockingham Co., N. C. where his son, John Hendricks, was born 7 Feb. 1798. John Hendricks left the old homestead on attaining his 20th year, going in 1818 to Sumner Co., Tenn. where he married June 6 the following year. Soon afterwards he moved to Simpson Co., Ky. remaining there a number of years, emigrated to Jackson Co., Mo. where he remained until 1845 when he came to Texas. While on his way, and within two days travel of the Red River crossing, he heard the cannonading at Old Fort Washita, celebrating the annexation of Texas to the United States. At that time all of Texas west of Bonham, including the present area of Grayson County was called Fannin district. He helped to lay the bounds of Grayson County, and was one of three Commissioners appointed by the legislature to lay off Sherman, the county seat, which they located six miles west of the present city of Sherman. The first session of Court in Grayson County, was held under an elm tree on his place and justice was administered there with all the formality and impressiveness that now attends judicial proceedings. The juries on being charged, retired to some isolated opening where verdicts were rendered with the same secrecy, that obtains in jury rooms. The county seat was removed from Old Sherman to the present location on account of scarcity of water. John Hendricks subsequently solved the water problem by sinking the "White Rock Well", the first well dug in Grayson County. He survived his wife, Ruth, ten years. They were the parents of 16 children, ten sons and six daughters, of whom nine are living. His descendants number 115 representing five generations. It can truly be said of Uncle John, that he went to his grave at peace with God and all mankind. He left countless friends, not one enemy. He was strong mentally and physically. He possessed a voice that has often been heard at a distance of four miles, each word clear and distinct as the note of a bugle horn. His memory was wonderful and served him up to the hour of his death. | 3125 | John HENDRICKSON 1991: 25 1963:NA Perhaps named for his paternal uncle, John was probably born in Allegany Co. In about 1814 when William Greenlee (father of John's brother, George's wife, Nancy Greenlee) bought land in Lake (now Washington Twp.), Holmes Co., Ohio the only families living there were those of J. L. Priest, Samuel Marvin, William Hendrickson, Elijah Bolling and John Hendrickson. John was drafted for service in the War of 1812 but became ill and his brother George substituted for him. John applied for bounty land in Oregon Territory, on 10 Sep 1855 at age 74. His petition was denied on the grounds that his name was not recorded. However, his brother's bounty application in Iowa proved the service. He owned various pieces of property in Ohio before moving to Muscatine Co, Iowa by the 1840 census, where his household was recored as consisting of 1 male 50 and over, (John), 1 male 10-15 (Lemuel), and females as follows: 1 50-60 (Margaret), 2 15-20 (unknown). Older children had married in Ohio. John seems not to have taken a Donation Land Claim in his own name but lived on the Swan Island claim which was in the name of his young son Lemuel. The Donation Claim was No. 1018 Swan Island, Oregon. The arrival date in Oregon Territory was 20 Nov 1848. Lemuel lived in an old boat on the Swan Island property. John and Margaret both died in 1860 or later in Washington State. Both possibly are buried in the Vancouver cemetery.
