Subj: Alexander and Sarah Cummings and their offspring Date: 97-08-14 21:20:16 EDT From: jkreuzsprintmail.com (j kreuz) To: Chascumaol.com.

We've set out some of the information on the children of Alexander Cummings and Sarah Mattoone. The only known son is Malacki based on a deed dated 1739. Malacki's children are believed to be: Malacki married to Verlinda Taylor, children - Joseph, Benjamin, Thomas and Judah Benjamin; Robert and William. Malacki did not leave a Will, only thing on file with the Fauquier County, VA clerk's office is an inventory. We have speculated that Alexander and Sarah had more than one child. It is believed that Simon Cummings (b. 1710 - d. 1771) is also a son. Simon's children are listed in detail in his will filed ca. 1771 in Fauquier County and the Will of his sons Simon Alexander (d. 1813 - Fauquier Co.) and John (d. 1804 - Fauquier Co.) Other children listed on Simon's will are Sarah Mynatt married to Richard (children; Lena, William, Margaret, Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, George, Hannah, Nancy, John W. and Susannah); Sinty Edge married to John Edge Sr.; Conney Birciram married to George Bryan; Elizabeth and Peter. Copies of these Wills can be obtained either from the Fauquier County Clerk's office in Warrenton VA, or I will provide with SASEs. It is also possible that a man named William was a son of Alexander but I have no verification or leads on this. Lastly, I have previously set out a scenario that would support the theory that Moses Cummings of Fauquier Co. is also a son of Alexander. Moses married Winny Lattimore, the daughter of Alexander's neighbor, John. Moses died in 1785 and left a will (Liber S, Stafford County, VA 1785 pg. 254) that named Winny Cummins, Administratrix - to the thirds of the Estate; Asa Cummins, Daniel O Cain; William Wilson; Tabitha Cummins; Sarah Cummins; William Cummins; Moses Cummins; and John Cummins - child's part. No information is known yet about Daniel O Cain. William Wilson married ca. 1769 and came to Breckenridge Co. KY Tabitha Cummins married ca. 1775; William Cummins married 1778 Moses Cummins married ca. 1780 and moved to Garrard Co. KY. It is from this Moses that Francis Funk (Cummins Ancient, Cummins New) is descended and is the line containted in the aforementioned book. He is listed on the DAR index and had ten children listed on his Will of 1803: Daniel, Elizabeth, Moses, Stephen, Hannah, Cealah, Polly, Thomas and Dally. John married ca. 1782 and moved to Rockingham CO. NC. per deeds from Rockingham CO. On a deed dated 2/19/92 he granted to his daughter Isabel and her husband William Simpson $10 and one Negro; to his daughter Nancy King, 3 Negroes. (Forgive us, we must admit our family has a history of being involved in slavery). The deeds were witnessed by Robert Cummings, married to Mary, Levi King married to Nancy, William Simpson married to Isabel and Nathan and Reuben Massey. On a deed dated 7/30/1805 John granted to his daugther Elizabeth Knight married to Thomas, 2 Negroes. Asa Cummings (9/1/1746 - d. 9/5/1816 Warren Co. KY) married ca. 1761 but there is no information available to tell us his wife's name. He is listed in the Virginia Genealogist "Stafford Co. Legislative Petitions" with brother William from 1776 to 1781. In 1790 Asa is listed in the Stafford County census with "11 white souls." Also listed were William Cummings and William Wilson. In 1795 Asa bought 640 acres of land in Rockingham Co. NC (where brother John relocated) and in 1737 purchased 30 more acres. He sold 283 acres of land "left to me by my grandfather John Lattimore of Fauquier Co. VA" listed on a Fauquier Co. deed. He sold the last of his NC properties in 1795, 1797, 1803, 1804 and 1807. In 1810, Asa is listed on teh Warren Co. KY census with 250 acres of land in Logan County. No definitive documentation has been discovered to verify his children but researchers have listed the following: 1. William (1765-1784) married to Amanda Cummings (1811-1899) in Clark Co. KY; 2. Jesse (1770-1846) wife unknown. He had a son named Asa who married Rachel House on 5/15/1817. Their children are: Margaret Meador; Robert Henry (Lavinia Ray; Mary Burchett; Peter; Martha A Cardwell; Elizabeth Cox; Thomas J. (Mary F. Halcomb); Rachel Luella (John Dowell); and John Morgan (Jessie R). 3. James (1775-1826) married to Elizabeth. Children: Charles; Jefferson; James and Jeptha Cummings; Nancy Lewis; Miles Edward (Sally). 4. Ellizabeth (1775-1794) married to Thomas Land 1806 Logan Co. KY. 5. Elan (1778-1847) married Lavinia Kelly 1811 Logan Co. Children: Mordecai (Elizabeth March); Harrison; Henry (Martha Farley); Wilkerson Perry (Edithia House); Sarah A.; Elizabeth; James Harley (Sara Benetta Bell); Jon; and Alexander. 6. Asa married to Nancy Howerton and later Francis Steerman (More information on Asa later) 7. Nancy married to Isaac Howershelt; 8. Richard and 9. Moses. Next installment will be Asa.

The 1800 Rockingham Co., NC and the 1810 Warren Co., KY indicate that "Sally" was younger than this. It is posible that she was the d/o one of Moses Cumin's sons, euch as Asa Cumins.
