Hinton, Hendricks, Hopper, Chaney, May. Posted by: Ginger Date: September 16, 2002 at 07:34:11
A few questions for Hinton and Hendricks researchers. What proof exists that Jesse Hinton bc1759-1760 married an Elizabeth Hendricks bc 1768? If she was a Hendricks then who were her parents? I have a family journal written by a son of Francis Marion Chaney b 1830 in Simpson Co Ky (His grandfather William Chaney b 1782 had place on Drakes Creek in Simpson Co Ky). Francis Marion Chaney lived with this son, Josephus, until he died in 1915. Francis Marion Chaney married on 12 June 1853 an Elizabeth Andres May b 28 March 1825 in Simpson Co Ky., daughter of John May bc 1783-1787 Va. and Elizabeth Hinton bc 1792 NC. Elizabeth Hinton was the daughter of, according to the family journal, Jesse Hinton and Elizabeth Hopper. According to everything I have seen posted on the internet, she was the daughter of a Jesse Hinton and an Elizabeth Hendricks. Now, all of the people mentioned in this journal, up to the earliest generations, have checked out to be accurate. I am trying to determine if Jesse Hinton bc 1759-1760 was really married to a Hopper and not a Hendricks. What proof exists for all the information posted on the internet that Elizabeth Hintons mother was a Hendricks??

According to the journal of Josephus Chaney Jesse Hinton married an Elizabeth Hopper. This is very possible for a number of reasons. The Hinton and the Hopper families were early members of the Matrimony Creek Baptist Church. The earliest known list of members dated September 1776 lists Charlotte and Elizabeth Hinton, (the mother of Jesse and Charlotte), next to Darby Hopper as well as, Joseph Hopper and his wife Jane, Joshua Hopper, Lucy Hopper, William Hopper and his wife Cattron, and John Hopper. Elizabeth the wife of Jesse Hinton was born 10 Mar 1768 according to Hinton Family records, which would make her far too old to be one of Henry Hendrick Jr's daughters since he would have only been 16 years of age at the time of her birth. Jane and Joseph Hopper had a daughter Elizabeth b. abt 1768 who is mentioned in his Rocknigham Co., Will proved May 1829. Elizabeth is listed under her married name which is cited as Hairston or Harrison in most transcripts of the will but no link has ever been proved to either of these families. It is very probable that the name is somewhat hard to read and was intented to be Elizabeth Hinton. Jesse and Elizabeth named thier fifth and sixth children Joseph and Jane Hinton. Joseph was the second oldest male younger only to Samuel C. Hinton who is thought to be named after Jesse's father.
