I'm trying to find info on my brickwall of Alonzo (could be sp.Alonso), HENDRICKS/HENDRIX b. abt 1848 - d. ? He was a school teacher. While teaching in Denison, Grayson Co. TX about 1880, he boarded with the COFFMAN family, probably David H.Coffman-b.1825, wife-Harriet (maiden MOORE),sons-Robb,David Jr.,& Sterling P., and dau.-Mary E. Alonzo married (probably in late 1880 early 1881?) the dau. Mary Elizabeth COFFMAN-b. about 1865-d. ? They had one son, James Monroe HENDRICKS - b. Sept. 7, 1881 in Denison,Grayson co. TX. Alonzo left after James was born and he and Mary divorced. Family lore is that they heard he had another family somewhere else. I did find a Monroe HENDRICKS in either Grayson Co. TX or another neighboring county. Could he be a brother to Alonzo? Any help would be greatly appreciated on this family. Thank you.

I am looking for my ggggrandfather. He was a teacher boarding with the Coffman family. He married Mary Elizabeth on October 9, 1880. On marriage certificate it says A.H. Hendricks. Mary gave birth to James Monroe in 1881. We can’t find any information on Alonzo (Alonso, Lonzo, Lonso). Any help would be greatly appreciated. The school was in Denison, Texas. Thanks so much.

      Martin Hendrix adds:
For 1999 narrative to be correct, Alonzo departed Round Pond, Simpson County, Kentucky, after the 1880 Census, (enumerated on the first day of June, 1880) and traveled to Dennison, Texas, to marry Mary Elizabeth Coffman on October 9, 1880. The World War I draft registration for James Monroe Hendricks shows a birth date of 7 Sep 1881. This places the month of conception near the first of January ±, 1881. This is a very condensed time line.

This is certainly a viable scenario, but not readily explained. Unless there was something or someone that prompted Alonzo to depart Kentucky, abruptly after the 1880 Census, for Texas. And shortly thereafter get married.

The connection to the Henry Hendricks Family was well established in Grayson County, Texas, well prior to 1880.

In the 1880 Census, the family of John and Ruth Strader Hendricks, and several of their adult children, are found living in Grayson County, Texas. This family arrived in Grayson County, in 1847. The 1880 Census reveals that John Hendricks was born in North Carolina, his father was born in New Jersey. This family can be traced back to the Henry Hendricks family of Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Alonzo H Hendricks’ connection to Grayson County is the marriage certificate, dated October 9, 1880, for A.H. Hendricks and Mary Elizabeth Coffman. Perhaps the marriage was arranged by one of the cousins residing in Grayson County. This could be the explanation for the very condensed timeline between the presence of Alonzo in the June enumeration for the 1880 Census in Simpson County, the October, 1880 marriage, the birth of James Monroe in September, 1881, and the subsequent divorce and departure from Grayson County by Alonzo.
